Preparing for Winter: How to Prep Your Apartment for Cooler Weather

The cold weather is here and it’s only going to get colder! That means it’s time to prepare your home for the winter months. Here are a few things you can do to make sure that your family stays warm when the temperature drops.

Check Your Windows

When prepping for cold temperatures, start with your windows. This is the primary location where cold air will seep into the apartment. Especially in older buildings that were constructed using lower-quality materials.

Check for a draft coming in around every window in your home. If you notice cold air getting in, use weather stripping to seal those areas. Keep in mind that weather stripping is inexpensive and takes only a few minutes to apply. It will also keep your apartment much warmer and reduce your energy bill during cold months.

Check Your Doors

Next, check your doors. This is another location where unwanted cold air can get in, making your apartment more difficult to keep warm. Again, use weather stripping to keep warm air in and cold air out.

You could also use door socks to place in front of doors to keep drafts out.

Test Your HVAC Unit

As winter arrives, it’s crucial to make sure that your HVAC system is operating efficiently. Residents of an apartment building might not have access to their heating/cooling system, so ask your building manager to have the system serviced before the weather turns cold.

Reverse Your Ceiling Fans

Believe it or not, reversing your ceiling fans during the winter is a great tip for keeping each room in your apartment warm. During the summer, you want the fans to push cool air down to cool rooms. But the opposite is true during the winter.

Reversing your fans will help circulate the warm air throughout your apartment while pulling the cooler air upwards.

Change Your Bedding and Curtains

Another great tip to help prep your apartment for winter is to add warmer bedding and curtains. Swapping your lighter blanket and sheets for a heavier comforter and flannel sheets will provide a cozy night’s sleep.

Heavier curtains such as blackout curtains will offer an extra layer of insulation for preventing cold air from entering rooms through your windows.

Sleeping with your bedroom door shut will help keep your bedroom warmer.

Prepping for Winter in Your Apartment

When cold weather comes around, nothing is more important than staying warm. That’s why prepping for winter is so crucial. Fortunately, the tips contained here can help make sure you stay warm even when Mother Nature makes it super chilly outside.
