Giving Tuesday may be over but that doesn’t mean that you should stop helping others. There is no shortage of need in our community. Consider the following ways to make an impact this holiday season.
Adopt a family
Many local charities have lists of families in need of the basics. If you belong to a church you might start there. The non-profit organization Allen County Christmas Bureau is also a worthy cause. To adopt a family in need for Christmas, contact them at (260) 710-2163.
Ring a bell
Ring a bell on behalf of the Salvation Army. The families helped through the Red Kettle Campaign may be without food, facing eviction or unable to pay their monthly bills. By volunteering to ring bells at various locations around town for just a few hours you can make someone’s holiday season. Visit registertoring.com for more information.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana has a need for a few Santa’s helpers to wrap gifts at the agency, 1005 W. Rudisill Blvd. in Fort Wayne. They need help on December 12th-15th from 8 am-7:30 pm and December 16th from 8 am-5 pm. Call the agency at (260) 456-1600 to sign up.
Donate to a coat drive
The Volunteer Center is organizing its annual Coats for Kids Campaign through December 4th. It’s now in its 16th season this year, with over 50,000 winter coats distributed since 2000! Donate a new or gently used winter weight coat at any Peerless Cleaner, Kroger, Scott’s Food Stores, and Penn Station locations or at Adams Radio, 2000 Lower Huntington Road. Call the Volunteer Center at (260) 424-3505 with questions.
It might not seem like a traditional act of holiday goodwill, but it can be lifesaving. The Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster and to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. As part of that mission, the Red Cross also provides about half of the nation’s blood supply through voluntary blood donations. The Fort Wayne Donor Center is located at 1212 E. California Road in Fort Wayne, (across from the Memorial Coliseum). Call (260) 484-9336 for donation hours.
