The cold weather is upon us, here in Fort Wayne, we've even seen our first snow of the year; and for some of us, that can only mean one thing – cold and flu season. Catching a cold is a surefire way to worsen you day; however, it almost seems that every year, without fail, we find ourselves coming down with a cold.  Stuffy nose, hard to breathe, miserable for days; the symptoms go on and on.  The good news is that there are steps you can take in order to stay ahead of cold & flu season this winter.

Wash your Hands

People have been telling you to wash your hands since day one.  Yet, people wonder how they possibly came down with a cold!  Washing your hands multiple times per day is the best way to prevent a cold.  When washing your hands, scrub them for 20 seconds. (Sing the Happy Birthday song twice.)  Touching an infected surface, then touching near your mouth or face is the number one way viruses are spread.


Because germs are spread via touching things, it is a good idea to disinfect anything and everything.  Clean any high traffic objects in your house or office – keyboards, phones, doorknobs, desks, etc.  Carry around some disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer for when you can’t avoid touching objects that might be infected.

Take Care of Yourself

Another underrated action you can take to prevent a cold is to simply take care of yourself. Eat right, and make sure your body is getting necessary vitamins to support your immune system.
