You never can do too much homework when it comes to shopping around for an apartment. When meeting with the leasing office, it’s a good idea to come prepared with a list of questions as a starting point. Here are a few suggestions to get the conversation started:
1. What are the available terms?
Some apartments offer 3, 6, and 12-month leases. Some require first month’s rent down as a deposit, while others don’t. Ask about incentives for paying early.
2. Is the apartment community pet-friendly?
A very important question for pet owners is whether or not the apartment community accepts pets and which kind. Some communities accept most pets while others only allow small dogs and cats. You’ll also want to find out if there is a pet deposit or any other fees.
3. Are utilities paid?
Finding out which utilities you’ll need to pay and the average cost can help you budget for your new apartment. You don’t want any surprises!
4. Rules and regulations
Most apartment communities have a handbook or a list of rules and regulations regarding parking, rent payment, the use of grills, and more. Find out what you need to know before you move in.
5. What’s in the area?
This question can be easily answered by taking a drive around the area surrounding the apartment community, but the leasing team can easily tell you as well about what’s nearby including shopping, entertainment, parks, walking trails, and highways.
